Who We Are

How it all started

In 2015, when the Schuberts launched Ady’s Army with the mission to “serve God by serving special needs families,” they anticipated that their core mission would remain constant, while the specific focus might evolve. This happened in 2018 when their non-speaking daughter, Ady began to communicate for the first time. A once underestimated girl, began to communicate and her expressions unveiled a longing for purpose and community. This prompted the Schuberts to explore options beyond their local resources in Alabama, leading them to discover Brookwood in Georgetown (BiG) in Georgetown, Texas. Captivated by BiG’s Model and mission to change the way the world views adults with disabilities, Adys Army transitioned to Adys BiG Army on February 14th, 2023 when they created a satellite campus in Birmingham, AL.

A Replication Community of Brookwood in Georgetown (BiG)

Ady’s BiG Army is a replication community of Brookwood in Georgetown (BIG), a groundbreaking program for adults with disabilities located near Austin, Texas. We are closely affiliated with BiG and partner with them to bring their vision and mission to adults with disabilities and their families in the Birmingham area. While still in its infancy, our innovative program has gained the attention of many groups and organizations in the disability community.

Our Staff and Volunteers

Ady’s BiG Army was founded by Brian and Chrissy Schubert. Chrissy currently serves as Executive Director. As a mother of a special needs child, she brings a wealth of personal experience to the program as well as a fierce determination to improve the lives of adults with disabilities and their families and caregivers.

The program is staffed with experienced, caring individuals who have devoted their lives to helping individuals with special needs. These include retired special educators, speech therapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists, nurses and more. Our maximum staff-to-Citizen ratio is one to six.

We also have many enthusiastic volunteers who provide essential support services for our program. All our staff and volunteers are carefully screened to ensure the absolute security and safety of our Citizens. If you would like to volunteer for us within the program, for events, or for respite activities, please contact Taylor at taylor@adysbigarmy.org.
